When to replace cartridge filters vs just cleaning them

“In Austin, your filter cartridges work overtime. Knowing when to retire them saves your pump’s life.”

Most cartridge filters should be cleaned every 3-6 months and replaced every 2-3 years. However, in Austin, heavy Oak pollen and calcium scaling can shorten that lifespan.

Expert Replacement Signs:

  1. High Baseline Pressure: If your filter pressure remains high even after a thorough cleaning, the fabric pores are likely permanently clogged with calcium and oils.
  2. Fraying or Cracking: If the plastic end caps are cracked or the “bands” around the pleats are broken, the cartridge will “bypass” dirty water back into the pool.
  3. Visible Mold/Algae: If you can’t get the green or black stains out of the pleats, it’s time for new ones.

Austin Detail: The fine limestone dust from new construction in areas like Leander can clog a cartridge faster than almost anything else.
