When is it time to resurface my pool? Signs of Austin plaster wear.

When is it time to resurface my pool? Signs of Austin plaster wear.

“A pool’s plaster is like its skin. In Austin, the sun and hard water make for a tough life.”

Most plaster finishes in Austin last 10–15 years. However, poor chemical maintenance (especially high calcium and high pH) can cut that in half.

Expert Signs it’s Time:

  1. “Rough” Texture: If the floor feels like sandpaper on your feet, the top “cream” layer of the plaster has eroded, exposing the aggregate underneath.
  2. Stubborn Staining: If those “Texas Tan” stains won’t lift even with professional acid washing, they may be deep in the plaster matrix.
  3. Delamination: If you see chunks of plaster flaking off, that’s a sign the bond between the plaster and the gunite shell has failed.

Austin Detail: The best time to resurface is between October and March. The cooler weather allows the new plaster to cure more slowly and evenly than in the 100-degree heat.
