What is the ideal pH for pools in Central Texas?

“In Austin, if you aren’t adding acid, your pH is too high. It’s that simple.”

The “ideal” range for pool pH is 7.2 to 7.6. However, in Austin and the Hill Country, our water has naturally high alkalinity. This acts like a spring, constantly pushing your pH upward.

Why 7.2–7.4 is the “Pro” Sweet Spot:

  1. Scale Prevention: As we’ve discussed, high pH makes calcium scale on your tiles. Keeping it on the lower end of the range keeps those minerals dissolved.
  2. Chlorine Efficiency: Chlorine is much more effective at a pH of 7.2 than at 7.8. By keeping your pH lower, you actually save money on chlorine.
  3. Bather Comfort: The pH of the human eye is about 7.4. Keeping your pool water near this level prevents that “red eye” feeling after a swim.

Austin Detail: Because our tap water is so alkaline, you should expect to add Muriatic Acid or dry acid almost every single week during the summer.
