Should I upgrade to a Variable Speed Pump to save on Austin energy bills?

“In Austin, a single-speed pump is like driving your car at 100 mph everywhere you go. A VSP is like having an automatic transmission.”

Variable Speed Pumps (VSPs) are now the industry standard, and for good reason. In the Central Texas climate, where we need long run times, a VSP can pay for itself in less than two years.

The Savings:

A traditional single-speed pump is an energy hog. It runs at one speed—Maximum. A VSP allows you to drop the RPMs to a whisper-quiet level, using up to 80% less electricity while still providing excellent filtration.

Expert Upgrade Advice:

  1. Austin Energy Rebates: Check with Austin Energy or your local utility. They often offer rebates for upgrading to Energy Star-rated VSPs.
  2. Longer Run Times, Better Water: Because a VSP is so cheap to run, you can run it for 24 hours a day. This keeps your water constantly filtered and your chemicals perfectly mixed.
  3. Quiet Operation: If your equipment pad is near a bedroom or patio, the silence of a VSP is worth the price alone.

Austin Detail: During an Austin “freeze event,” a VSP is a lifesaver. You can set it to a medium speed to keep the pipes safe without wasting massive amounts of electricity over a 3-day freeze.
