Salt vs Chlorine: Which is better for the Austin climate?

“Salt pools are easier on the skin, but harder on the maintenance in Central Texas.”

The most common question we get from new pool owners in Austin is whether they should go with a salt system or stick to traditional liquid chlorine. The answer depends on your budget and how much you hate “liquid limestone” scaling.

The Truth About Salt in Austin

A salt pool is a chlorine pool. The salt cell simply converts salt into chlorine through electrolysis. In Austin, however, we have a unique challenge: Calcium.

Expert Comparison:

  1. Water Feel: Salt wins here. The water is softer on the skin and eyes, which is great for those long Austin summers.
  2. Equipment Longevity: Chlorine wins. Salt is corrosive. It can be hard on natural Austin limestone coping if not sealed properly, and it can shorten the life of your heater and pump internals.
  3. Summer Performance: In July and August, when Austin water temps hit 95°F, salt cells become less efficient. Many salt pool owners find they still need to “supplement” with liquid chlorine during heatwaves.
  4. Scaling: Salt cells generate heat, which causes calcium to scale rapidly on the internal plates. In Austin, you’ll need to clean your salt cell with acid every 3 months.

Austin Detail: If you have a salt pool with natural Austin limestone or flagstone coping, you must use a high-quality stone sealer. Without it, the salt will penetrate the porous stone and cause it to flake and “spall” within a few years.

Whether you go salt or chlorine, we can keep it balanced. the Matts handle both systems across Cedar Park and West Lake.
