Protecting your pool computer & automation from Texas lightning storms

“In Austin, lightning is beautiful to watch but deadly for your pool’s motherboard.”

Modern pools are controlled by computers (Pentair IntelliCenter, Jandy iAquaLink, etc.). These circuit boards are extremely sensitive to the power surges that often accompany our Central Texas spring storms.

Expert Protection Tips:

  1. Surge Protection is a Must: We recommend installing a dedicated surge protector on your pool’s sub-panel. This can save you $2,000+ in board replacements.
  2. Check Your Grounding: Ensure your equipment pad is properly “bonded” and grounded. This gives stray electricity a path to the earth instead of through your pump motor.
  3. Manual Overrides: Learn how to operate your pump and valves manually in case the automation board fries during a storm.

Austin Detail: The limestone bedrock in Austin can actually make it harder to get a good “earth ground.” Professional installation of grounding rods is essential.
