Does the City of Leander have specific pool drainage rules?

Does the City of Leander have specific pool drainage rules?

“In Leander, where you drain your pool matters as much as how you clean it.”

As the Austin metro area grows, local cities are getting stricter about pool drainage. If you’re in Leander or Cedar Park, you can’t just pump your pool water into the street or the neighbor’s yard.

The Rules of the Road

Most local ordinances require that pool water be drained into the sanitary sewer system (via your home’s cleanout) rather than the storm drain system. Storm drains lead directly to local creeks and Lake Travis, and pool chemicals can harm the local ecosystem.

Expert Compliance Tips:

  1. Find Your Cleanout: Locate your main sewer cleanout (usually a white PVC pipe with a cap in your yard). This is where you should route your backwash or drainage hose.
  2. De-chlorinate First: If you MUST drain to a lawn, you should ensure the chlorine level is zero. However, we always recommend the sewer cleanout to be safe.
  3. Check Stage Restrictions: During Stage 2 or 3 restrictions, draining and refilling a pool may require a special permit or be prohibited entirely.

Austin Detail: Leander has specific rules about “nuisance” drainage. If your pool water causes erosion or standing water on a neighbor’s property, you could face significant city fines.
