Do I really need to winterize my pool in Central Texas?
“In Austin, we don’t winterize—we just change our strategy.”
If you’re from the Northeast or Midwest, you’re used to draining the pipes, blowing them out with air, and putting a heavy cover on the pool for six months. Don’t do that in Austin.
Why Northern Winterizing Fails in Austin
Our winters are too short and too erratic. We might have a freeze on Monday and be 75°F on Thursday. If you cover your pool and stop the pump, that 75-degree day will turn your pool green instantly.
The Austin Strategy:
- Keep it Open: Keep the pool filled and the equipment running.
- Adjust Run Times: You can drop your pump run time to 6-8 hours (during the day) but ensure your freeze protection is active for the night.
- Chemical Balance: Chlorine lasts much longer in the winter, but you still need to balance the pH to protect your plaster from “aggressive” cold water.
Austin Detail: Our “winter” is actually the best time to do major equipment repairs or resurfacing because the demand is lower and the weather is manageable for the crews.
